BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY

A Virtual Tour of a Backgammon Tournament - Sample Draw Sheet

BackGammon By the Bay’s usual tournament format is double elimination—that is, it takes two losses before a player is eliminated from the tournament. Other common tournament formats are round robin, Swiss, modified Swiss, single elimination, and even triple elimination. The tournament directors will be happy to explain all the vagaries of your local tournament’s format.

Whatever the format, they all have this in common: At the start of the tournament, every player’s name is entered into the Main Flight drawsheet. In a double elimination format, as each match is finished the winners’ names continue to be recorded on the Main Flight drawsheet, and the losers’ names are entered into the Consolation Flight drawsheet.

Typically, drawsheets are made up of numbers divisible by eight (i.e., 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and so on). When there are fewer players in the field than the drawsheet accommodates, the tournament director will assign a bye to each empty slot so that there will be an entry in each slot. A bye is an automatic win. In our example, if there were six players in the field, two of the players’ names you see illustrated would be replaced with the word “bye.” The idea is always to keep the field to that divisible-by-8 format, so that ultimately there will be two contenders for the winner’s seat.

Sample drawsheet, main flight

This drawsheet shows an eight-player field. Each match for the first three rounds is a 5-point match, and first place and second place will be determined in a match played to seven points.

From this sample drawsheet, we can see that three of the four first-round matches are completed, the names of the winners of each of the three matches (Anya, Horst and Francisco) having been entered into Round 2. Mark’s, Carrie’s and Sam’s names have been entered into the Consolation drawsheet.

Now we can see the beauty of the double elimination format—one loss doesn’t leave you high and dry, it puts you into a whole new tournament! The four players who didn’t win in the Round 1 in the Main Flight will be vying to become the Consolation Winner. Two additional names will be added from Round 2 in the Main Flight, and everyone has two chances to earn the title Champion!

P.S. To find out what happened in the match between Peter Paul and Mary, trot on over to the Sample Game.
