BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY

Tournament Results

Sunday, 16 June 1996
San Mateo, California

Although we were fewer in number than we have been in our previous outings, we were an illustrious crew nonetheless. And the envelopes went to:

Beginner's section (8 players):

        Main Winner - Vesko Marinov
                    2nd - Andy Paik

        Consolation Winner - Ron Dumont
                    2nd - Sarah Berger

Intermediate section (16 players):
Let's all welcome Stan Weiss to The Bigs now.

        Main Winner - Stan Weiss
                    2nd - Julius High

        Consolation Winner/ David Feinberg
                    2nd Tony Rothschild
                    (Split)

Open section (17 players):
These folks' KG ratings (and their pocketbooks) are a tad weightier as the result of the June tourney.

        Main Winner - Steve Clark
                    2nd - Rawlin Pullen

        Consolation Winner - Nick Ballard
                    2nd - Blake Sorem

Congratulations to you all!

Laury Mac was on hand (no pun) to give wonderfully relaxing and refreshing neck-and-shoulder massages. Extra big smiles were seen on those who partook of her ministrations.

This month's long distance award goes to our very own Joan Clark, who returned from Ireland after only two weeks (she would have liked to have been there for two months!), but said she wouldn't have missed collecting Steve's winnings for anything.

We are heartened to continue seeing new faces at the tourneys, and hope you will continue to spread the word for what is an enjoyable venture to the world of backgammon. Again, if you know any folks who play backgammon but might be shy about a tournament experience, we hope we've made the whole thing easily understood and comfortable for the true novices. Please invite them along with you, and we'll roll out the welcome mat.

It was delightful to meet FIBS' Jill, in person. She spends her summer break from Wellesley in the area.

Things we're thinking about, so why don't you (and give us your input):

  • An in-house ratings system
  • Using chess clocks in time-worrisome matches
  • Beheading for late arrivals
  • Sponsoring a Bay Area backgammon team for City Challenges

There's a new backgammon presence in the Bay Area: FIBS! Marvin was in town to help us celebrate.

    Keep on rollin' well,

    Joan Clark
    Beth Skillman
