A special note about the three winners this month: Congratulations to Paul Ferguson, an official Intermediate player! And congratulations to Richard McIntosh, an official Open player! And congratulations to Nick Ballard, who is now auditioning for the Burt Lancaster role in the remake of The Swimmer. (That's the movie where Burt was on a quest to visit all the "pools" in his neighborhood, get it??)

BGBB player make an impact the world over. Recent tournament winners included the following BGBB players (we're so proud of you!):

Karsten BuschLas Vegas, Beginners Consolation Winner
Steve ClarkLas Vegas, FIBS Tourney 2nd Place
Ron DumontLas Vegas, Beginners Consolation 2nd Place
Ron KarrLas Vegas, Open Consolation 2nd Place
Bill PhippsLas Vegas, Open Consolation Winner
Maureen Wasley  Las Vegas, Blitz Winner
Elliott WinslowSao Paulo, Brazil, Open Winner

Yay!

Celebrations, celebrations! Ron Karr allowed the rest of us to celebrate with him. Congratultions, Ron, and thanks for the goodies. :)

A couple of folks brought the new book by Kit Woolsey and Hal Heinrich to the tourney and allowed the rest of us (they sold out of their supply in Las Vegas, I hear) to look it over. It sounds like this book is a real winner, as intermediate- and champion-level players all were raving about it.

BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY continues to be an enjoyable project for all of us. The players are seeming to enjoy it -- Folks who come and play in a tourney for the first time often come back again, so we think we've succeeded relaying to them how much fun backgammon can be. Folks who play regularly recognize that tournaments are a terrific way to test one's mettle and improve one's game (check out those heavy hitters in the Open bracket!). Joan and I have been asked if we don't miss playing sometimes, but to be honest, you put two gabbers like us into a room of 40 people or so, and well it's practically like hog heaven. We continue to solicit your feedback on ways we can accomplish both of these goals: having a fun tournament and learning more about backgammon.

The next generation of computer communication will contain sound effects. We're not there yet, so I'm asking you to put your imagination to work now:

Drum roll, with tympani accompaniment!

No generation of computer communication will ever be able to do what comes next, but since we're on the imagination train, let's make this baby hustle:

Confetti! Sparklers! Fanfare!

Announcing!

BGBB's on-line Finals Highlight Game is now up and running!

Who It Is: Folks who played in a monthly Open Division finals match.

What It Is: A selected game from the match, annotated lovingly by JellyFish, and commented upon astutely by Steve Clark. Available in nifty graphics to those with Java-capable browsers, and in ASCII for those without.

When It Is: This month's game is from the September finals. We hope to run a game from the previous month's finals every month, and so we hope to show you a game from November's finals starting in December.

Where It Is: CLICK HERE!

Why It Is: Because Richard McIntosh is such a wonderful and capable person. Richard not only recorded the match, not only configured a setup to record future matches, not only ran the moves through JellyFish, not only coordinated and input the commentary, and not only made possible the display and access on the Web page, but he wanted to share this wonderful learning opportunity with all of us. THANK YOU, Richard.

Still looking for: Public transport information to the Sunday tourney site. If you've done it, we'd like to hear all about it.

A special treat was there last Sunday, courtesy of Paul Ferguson. He demonstrated the new, wow 3.0 version of MacFIBS. He reports that it will be available some time soon. Did you know that MacFIBS had been awarded the 5-mouse designation by MacUser magazine? From what he showed me, MacUser might have to a new 6-mouse category for this one, it really looks terrific.

Lost and Found: I've got somebody's backgammon board. I'll bring it to the next tourney, but if you really miss it in the meantime, let me know.

Announcements (contributions happily accepted): Paul Stokes tells us that there's a regular chouette played every Friday in downtown Monterey. It's at the Muck Duck Pub on Alvarado, and they play from 4 in the afternoon 'til closing (2am). More info can be had from Paul (he's at 408.659.4250, or email at cntrmove@redshift.com), or just show up!

Quite a few folks from the area are planning on going to the Tavil Tourney in Turkey next January, and anyone who might want to pick up a few handy phrases for the journey (like, for example, Backgammon in Turkish is Tavil :)) can call Sule Kusogullari for a personal Turkish language lesson. She has very reasonable hourly rates, and she is also an able instructor in German and French. Sule can be reached at 415.776.3844.

A special note to tournament directors: You are invited to send us your tourney flyers for distribution at our tourneys.

A special note to football fans: Next month's 49'ers game is at Pittsburgh, which means ... it's the morning game, which means ... it starts at 10:00. The BGBB doors will be open, and we've got a special invitation to all you morning folks to join us at that time -- we'll have the game on, and maybe make a run to the Egg McMuffin store. Doors open at 9:30, so you can settle in to a comfortable chair if you want to come early.

Speaking of football, Joe Glazier and Karsten Busch took home the Funpacks this month. Neither Joan nor I won -- we'll have to fix that.

Upcoming tournament flyers, sample Chicago Point and Flint BackgammoNews newsletters, new backgammon publications, they're all available at the next tournament - the last BGBB tourney in 1996! is Sunday, December 15.

Keep on rollin' well,

Joan Clark
