Odis Chenault came back from Rio with a win, and he breezed by LA to win there as well. LA winners also included David MacBryde and Blake Sorem. We get very excited about the locals doing well -- we get to share the wealth with them too! Thanks for the sweets, Odis. Thanks Blake (and Blake's sister's cookie club) for those marvellous cookies, they were wonderful. And thanks to Elliott Winslow for truffling with us. And a three-day sugar high was had by all :)
Gathering around the yuletide log at December's tournament were some very special folks to us. R
ichard M cIntosh, computer/home page/sample game expert and all-around nice person, was there. Patti Beadles, high tech wizard, patient computer teacher and munificent home page landlord, was there. And all of our Ruling Committee made a visit: Thanks again to Nick Ballard, Elliott Winslow and Kit Woolsey for agreeing to adjudicate tricky tourney rulings and just generally keep us on the right track. We really appreciate the support all of you have given to BGBB this year.
R
ichard M cIntosh again shared his computer with us so that folks without regular on-line connections could check out the latest and greatest addition to the home page, the sample game from the finals match, with JellyFish roll-outs, pipcounts, graphics and commentary. The first game was very well received. The second game, from November's final between Kevin Mansfield and Nick Ballard, with commentary by Steve Clark, is now available for viewing. As we near tax season, Steve will be busier with 1040's than backgammon, so we will have a guest commentator for each of the games. Watch this space for more info.
Still looking for: Public transport info to the Sunday tourney site. If you've done it, I'd like to hear all about it.
Announcements: (Contributions happily accepted) None this month. Unless anybody wants to buy my old car?
A special note to tournament directors reading this: You are invited to send us your tourney flyers for distribution at our tourneys.
The final 1996 Football Funpacks went home with Antoine Azzaria and Claudia Imatt. And last month's winner was Carmi Brandis, not Karsten Busch as previously reported (who called us asking what he had forgot to pick up!). Congrats Antoine and Claudia :)
Beginning in February, members of BGBB will be eligible for a super-duper, special-whoopdedoo, ultimate-wow prize. We'll be instituting a points award system, similar to those now being used in other local clubs and by the ABT. But here comes the special part. While the pros traipse around the country for ABT points and the trophy that goes to the winner of the most points, we here at BGBB wondered, What significantly superior asset have we to offer someone who bests the field in a year-long quest for backgammon tourney performance? Well, there's something we have to offer that no one else does. It's significantly superior all right. It's world famous, in fact. It's ... J
oan's Brownies! And so, the BGBB club member who accumulates the most Brownie Points between February 1997 and January 1998 will be the recipient, in a private ceremony (no, we won't make you share them, unless you want to), a personalized and fresh batch of yummmmmy J oan's Brownies. And there may be a trophy in the bargain too, and other things that we may just up and decide to whip up during the course of the year. We'll just keep the suspense and fun factors at work in the meantime. There's been talk of participating in a City Team Challenge, and Brownie Points leaders will have first priority on spots on the BGBB Team.
Brownie Points (and if you're laughing at that name, ask us about some of the names we rejected) will be awarded every month at the San Mateo tourney, and at any other tourneys we might run during the year. They will go to all reported winners, and will be based on the sections (base 1 for the Beginners Section, base 2 for the Intermediate Section and base 4 for the Open Section), the number of players in the section (the more players, the more the base number goes up) and the result (a win is worth more than 2nd place). A running tally will be posted on the home page.
BGBB membership will be $20 per year. Members will also play at a $5 discounted entry fee at all BGBB tourneys. That means, that starting in February, entry fees will be $5 more per section for non-members. Complete schedules will be reflected on the home page.
Upcoming tournament flyers, sample Chicago Point and Flint BackgammoNews newsletters, new and old backgammon publications, they're all available at the next tourney, which is ...
