And so BGBB celebrates our first year. Last February, J
oan and I set out to gather together with the many San Francisco Bay Area backgammon folks with one main objective: to have fun. We have had a blast and our feedback from you is that you have enjoyed this opportunity for pleasant competition and sociability, so we are successful! Thanks to all of you for participating in the tourneys, making suggestions for betterment, bringing along new folks, and being such a joy to see and speak with and just generally be around. There are some individuals who deserve special recognition at this one-year juncture. First, one of the incentives to honing our skills and engaging in competition in a tournament setting is the opportunity to measure our achievements. Special notice, then, is accorded the following "graduates" who have successfully scaled their division rungs:
Ron Dumont
Paul Ferguson
Tom Henson
Julius High
Glen Lipska
Brad Louis
Jim Mason
Richard McIntosh
Michael Mitzenmacher
Nicky Niknam
David Nordlinger
Kristopher Thornton
Stan Weiss
Another group of folks is also singled out, because what BGBB is today is thanks most largely to them:
Tim Rumoshosky - Proprietor of the Bridge Center of San Mateo, and our accommodating landlord. It is Tim's pleasant facility that makes BGBB the great place it is to play backgammon.
Nick Ballard - Ruling Committee member, match equity whiz, dispenser of backgammon insight and ardent BGBB supporter.
Elliott Winslow - Ruling Committee member, permanent participant, almost long-distance tourney correspondent, chocolateer and wise sounding board.
Kit Woolsey - Ruling Committee member, judicious tourney question resolver, tournament and tournament director policy advisor, Sally accompanist and soon-to-be BGBB game analyst.
Patti Beadles - Sharer of the gammon.com domain, home page quality assurer and recipient of the monthly Best Hat Award.
Steve Clark - Although he shares BGBB loyalty with the 49'ers, we are Steve's No. 1 Fan for setting the high standards of the game analyses.
Ron Karr - Game analyst extraordinaire, who has graciously agreed to be a regular contributor in the future.
Rawlin Pullen - The Attendance Award winner.
And lastly, but certainly not leastly,
Richard McIntosh - Home Page initiator, author, artist, design master, maintainer and improver. More on the home page later, but for now, we simply say, Michelangelo Award recipient.
THANKS to all of you for making BGBB at one year such a success, such a wonderful endeavor, and such fun.
A new year, a new look. The new BGBB home page is revealed! Ease of use, accommodations to various browsers, more information, nifty graphics and colors, and invaluable learning experiences -- all these things and more has Richard McIntosh exquisitely crafted, and shares with us, to be found at
http://www.BGbythebay.com/ Also new: A selected game from last month's finals, with commentary by Ron Karr.
Those of you without Web access, we have some suggestions for you:
- Get Web access. Whatever the print media, your family, friends and neighbors, or Microsoft commercials may try to convince you makes hopping on the Techno Express worthy, BGBB's home page makes it worthwhile.
- Get one of those family, friends, or neighbors who has Web access to take you on a little jaunt to our home page.
- Attend a BGBB tournament. Richard has brought his computer along to several of the last few tourneys (for which, again, we thank him). Folks at last Sunday's tourney even got to sneak preview the new pages and the new annotated game from last month's finals. Folks with computers keep showing up at the tourneys, so it's a good shot to get a visit to the Web if you've not got regular access.
Still looking for: Public transport information to the Sunday tourney site. If you've done it, we'd like to hear all about it.
Announcements
(Contributions happily accepted)Two Biggies this month:
Ron Dumont and Sherry Cramer missed the December tournament, when they visited the romantic Monterey coast. Carmel worked its magic, and they are planning a wedding. We wish you both all the very best.
And Blake Sorem, between very broad smiles, told us that he and Gwen will also be married this year. We hope much happiness lies ahead for you both.
Congratulations being in order,
here's hoping that Ron and Sherry, and Blake and Gwen, enjoy many, many, many anniversaries.
Wanted: A ride to the BGBB tourney.
By: Several folks, all around the Bay.
Candidate Areas: San Francisco (there are three folks I know of who would like to catch a ride), Santa Cruz (since three or four folks show up from Monterey-to-Santa Cruz each month, ridesharing seems in order), Modesto (imagine, two Modestoans showed up on the same day!), and Marin (maybe someone offering a ride could even make a stop on the way through SF).
How To: I suggest making a posting to the ba-backgammon news group. (Details on subscribing, posting, unsubscribing, etc., are available on the BGBB home page. You do not have to have Web access to make use of ba-backgammon; all you need are an email address and access. Contact either J
oan or me, and we can give you a print-out of this page.) If you need a ride, make a posting to ba-backgammon about a week or so before the next tourney. Include your general location (or, in SF, be more specific about your neighborhood), and your contact information.
You can offer a ride, by responding to a "wanted" posting, or by yourself posting relevant info to ba-backgammon.
Remember! February begins the Membership drive! BGBB membership is $20 per year. Members will also play at a $5 discounted entry fee at the monthly tourneys. Details available in last month's write-up, on the home page, or from the usual BGBB sources.
Upcoming tournament flyers, sample Chicago Point and Flint BackgammoNews newsletters, new and old backgammon publications, they're all available at the next tourney, which is ...
