While San Francisco might be rated by Conde Nast as the world's most popular travel destination, third Sundays in San Mateo are making a run for somebody's top-ten list! It was great to see Bear and Jean Reeves, down from Anderson after a few months, and we heartily welcomed Bill Phipps and Rep Porter from Seattle-way. Jon Vietor made it up from San Diego, and Tim Helms was here from Iowa. We were all set to grace John Calcott, who visited from Colorado via Hawaii, with the Long Distance Award this month, when Allister Gorman, who stopped by from New Zealand on his way to Europe, said "G'Day!" Hope you all enjoyed your time in Northern California as much as we enjoyed seeing you here!
The BGBB Home Page is making a big splash in the backgammon circles, judging by the numbers of visitors stopping by. (Thanks Daniel Murphy for the good words in your sig line.) Kit's commentary on the January finals game and Blake's commentary on the February finals game are terrifically insightful. In particular, Blake's instructive match equity analysis is thorough and easy to understand. Thanks to all of our contributors for sharing their time and efforts and knowledge. And special thanks to R
ichard M cIntosh for coordinating this unique online backgammon library.
Sad news was also relayed on Sunday. Cheryl Silvers, one of the backgammon community's smiling treasures, passed away earlier this month. For many years, Cheryl was the Northern Nevada Backgammon Association's Beginners Division coordinator, helping novice players from registration through prize distribution. There's a whole generation of us backgammon players who "grew up" under Cheryl's tutelage. We will miss her. I will certainly miss my Blackjack Sister. We all send love and wellwishes to Windy.
There was someone looking for a ride to the tournament who tried posting to ba-backgammon, but for some reason the post didn't take. Has anyone else had this experience? Because there were three folks coming from San Francisco who were looking to rideshare, I'm still convinced that ba-backgammon is the way to coordinate this, but only if it's working. Details on ba-backgammon on the home page, but you don't need Web access to use it (let us know if you're Web-deprived and we can email that info to you). Feedback anyone?
Announcements
(Contributions happily accepted)Nobody's sharing any nifty announcements with me. BGBB's efforts to bring a big-time bg event to the area have faltered (for this year), but watch this space for news of a July-time special BGBB tourney.
John Calcott recently won the Summer Blitz FIBS tourney (tournament director David Escoffery related that John played his final match from the seaside in Hawaii). Well done, John! And Paul Albert continued his netstreak by winning the Consolation bracket in Bibi's II FIBS tourney.
Upcoming tournament flyers, sample Chicago Point and Flint BackgammoNews newsletters, new and old backgammon publications, they're all available at the next tourney, which is ...
