A combination of tax-time relief and Las Vegas preparation made for a record-setting BGBB April. We welcomed 50 players, nine of whom were new faces. Asger Kring was the most-distance-travelled new face, checking in from Denmark. And Manny Delis wins the most-years-since-we've-seen-his-beautiful-face award. Nice to have met you, Asger, and wonderful to have caught up with you again, Manny!
Several happenings to report on the BGBB Home Page. This month's annotated game, from last month's finals match, will be posted some time the week of April 28th. There will be lots to munch on with this one: JellyFish's clinical analyses filtered through Nick Ballard's intuition and experience are sure to make one of our most instructional submissions yet. We excitedly announce that Ron Karr has agreed to alternate with Steve Clark (whom we welcome back from beneath a mound of 1040's) as BGBB game analysts. They take over the reins next month. Thanks to 1997 guest commentators Nick Ballard, Blake Sorem and Kit Woolsey.
Nick, Blake, Kit, Steve and Ron: Your contributions to the students of backgammon are invaluable, and your generosity of time and insight is highly appreciated.
New stuff on the page right now:
- Readers of the rec.games.backgammon newgroup have recently been entertained by song titles and lyrics with a backgammon theme, a thread started by Marina Smith and Michael Earnshaw. With Marina's permission, R
ichard M cIntosh has collected the postings and gathered together other submissions, and put them all together on a new Songs for Beginners page. It's more than just a list, however. Since my words won't do it justice, make a visit. And feel free to make a submission (although, R ichard warns me, any new submissions containing any of the words "home," "roll," "count," "dance" or "shake" will have to be greatly original and extremely thematic). - Has this ever happened to you? You've dialed up FIBS (or NOBS, or GamesGrid, or any of the dozen or so online bg servers), and there you sit, no connection. And you wonder, Is it me, or is it my ISP, or is the server down? Well, now you and your hairdresser can bop over to the BGBB Home Page, click on the Server Status page, and get a second opinion. This is just too neat! When you bring up Server Status, it goes out and checks all the destinations for their "up" or "down"ness. Let us know how you like it!
And enjoy -- thanks R
ichard!

So, what's with the SF FIBS team match players? Here we sit, all alone at the bottom of the world-wide barrel (0.0 points accumulated?). For sure, they've been enjoyable contests -- it's kind of like being on a party bus with a common destination. Bringing two time-differentiated contingents together in one place has been a piece of work for team captain Daniel Murphy, who promises that no more early Sunday mornings and 7-point match formats will bring out the best of the SF participants. Let's rally, folks!
