Congratulations to you all!

As BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY heads into its second year of operation, big changes are in the wind. Joan Clark, our founding co-director, has traded her director's cap for a player's chapeau.

Being a subscriber to the "two heads are better than one" theory, Richard McIntosh has graciously expressed a willingness to help set the course for BGBB's future as its new co-director. Richard has been full-charge Web weaver and game annotation editor, as well as providing countless behind-the-scenes suggestions and encouragement to us for well over a year now, so the transition rates to be seamless.

Please one and all, join me in extending two giant welcomes: Welcome Joan to the "playing field" (Joan will be in the running for a batch of her own brownies now :)), and Welcome Richard to the director's cap (it looks good on you!).

As always, we solicit your feedback and suggestions for taking BGBB to new endeavors and accomplishments (any ideas for a East Bay site for us? an SF site? San Jose?).

A big, big thanks to all the BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY members, who made the July tournament the largest attendance ever. It was your membership fees that made the augmented prize funds possible. In addition to maintaining BGBB's Web site on-line, the membership fees pool also funds the Brownie Points champion's prize. Ron Karr hasn't got it locked up yet (even though he may be feeling complacent about his near-3-point lead -- Ron wasn't there to defend himself this month!). Brownie Points standings are posted on the Web site.

Players In The News:

BGBB players did well at Gammon Associates' 39th Invitational. Odis Chenault returned from in LA doubled up in mirth, as winner of the Doubles Division (with C.D. Nordlinger) and winner of the Open Consolation. Nicely done O!

Paul Stokes was also in the finals of that Doubles competition, coming in 2nd (with Marcia Karen). And Maureen Wasley took 2nd place in the Advanced section. Congrats everybody!

The Best Excuse Yet for Forgoing the San Mateo Tourney: Sherry Cramer and Ron Dumont missed last December's tourney, because they were in Carmel getting engaged. Well, wouldn't you know it, they got married on a tourney weekend too! Happiest of wishes to Sherry and Ron, married August 16th. Congrats, and we hope to share many, many happy anniversary celebrations with you!

Speaking of anniversaries, we're approaching a special milestone of our own: Game #12 in our collection of annotated games will be one from August's final. Game #11, a selection from July's final between Ron Karr and Daniel Murphy, analyzed by Steve Clark, will be posted soon.

September brings football season. The relevant 49ers schedule is:

Sep. 21st   Atlanta at home
Oct. 19th   at Atlanta (we'll open the doors early for this one)
Nov. 16th   Carolina at home
Dec. 21st   at Seattle (game starts at 8pm)

Announcements:

The ba-backgammon BBS is the perfect forum for offering or asking for ridesharing info. Details on subscription and posting is available on the BGBB Web site.

San Mateo's area code has changed, so the tourney-day phone number is different. For those of you who wish to make note, the new number is: 650.570.4218.

If you have an announcement you would like to be in next month's write-up, please contact Beth.

Upcoming tournament flyers, sample Chicago Point and Flint BackgammoNews newsletters, new and old backgammon publications, they're all available at the next tourney, which is ...
