A very, very proud announcement. Thanks to the largesse of Steve Smiley, BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY has added a wing on the rancho: The BGBB Lending Library. Steve's donations include books (dozens of them -- the BGBB Web site will be adding a new page with a complete list soon), a Saitek backgammon computer (an excellent beginner-to-intermediate learning tool), World Cup tapes, old issues of 'Inside Backgammon,' and travel-size backgammon boards (yes, these too are check outable). BGBB members are invited to make use of this vast learning resource, by borrowing any of the items (let us know in advance of the next tourney so that we can bring it to you) for a month, each item to be returned at the next tourney.
As you can imagine, we are completely wowed by Steve's very kind gesture in allowing the backgammon community access to this wonderful collection of material. And we hope that Steve's philanthropy may in turn spark others': Any additions to these resources will be welcomed.
On occasion, life visits upon us a chance to measure success. BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY's guiding principles are to provide a sociable atmosphere for the experience, learning and enjoyment of backgammon. Steve Smiley's generosity has given us the opportunity to realize a great leap forward in achieving these goals. Thank you so very much, Steve!
Thanks to the players who provided feedback about the round robin format in the Beginners section. They liked it, and we tried it again. And they liked it again. We'll keep it around for a while.
So, we're a little hung up on facts and figures; we're backgammon players. A whopping 56.1% of those eligible (read, interested) responded to our survey about BGBB expansion: where and when. Nearly 3/4 said a weekend schedule was preferable to a weekday evening, and despite that 50% of attendants were SF/North Bay/East Bay folks (the other 50% coming from the South Bay/Beyond South Bay), the overwhelming majority of respondents stated a preference for a San Francisco or East Bay venue. Hmmm, San Jose willing to go to SF, but not vice-versa? I guess we know where the real "city" is.
If you'd like to participate in this survey, send us an E-mail and we'll send you a copy.
Speaking of holiday shopping: Backgammon players on your list might enjoy some leather backgammon dice cups. Svilen Todorov sent samples to the October tourney (they'll be there in November too) of these high-quality cups. Information (sizes, colors, etc.) is available on his Web page, and specific information can be had from Svilen (gammon@mbox.cit.bg). Beth will keep a list of orders and vouchkeep the charges, so that we can all send an order in together. If there are half a dozen or so orders by next month, I think Svilen would be able to fill them before Christmas.
Two luminaries of the backgammon world visited the October BGBB tourney. Ken Arnold, recent arrival to the Bay Area (and I don't know who's happier, we or he that he's here!), the Founding Father of GamesGrid, is a most welcome addition to the Brownie Points racers. And Paul Ferguson took time out from readying the new version of MacFIBS (he reports that the MacFIBS 3.0 release is imminent), to join us.
Far outpacing his nearest competitor: Jeroen Kok from Holland is this month's Long Distance Award winner.
It was a singular pleasure that you all joined us!
Good luck to all the BGBB folks going to Las Vegas! If you can't get a hotel room for the last day (Saturday, the 15th), we'll look forward to seeing you bright and early on the next BGBB Sunday, which is
