The founder of CyberArts' GamesGrid backgammon server, BGBB member Ken Arnold, is also a member of the Generosity Begins at Home school. Ken has graciously extended to BGBB winners free GamesGrid subscriptions. Six-month GG subscriptions are given to the Main field winners in each of the Beginners, Intermediate and Open sections; three months of free GG play await the runners-up and the Consolation winners (in each section); and a one-month GG subscription is awarded to the second-place Consolation finishers. Ken has extended this offer to all BGBB San Mateo winners through next June.
One-month GG subscriptions this month go to Jim Mason and Richard McIntosh; three-month GG subscriptions are awarded to Barbara Chriss, Tom Henson, Bill Landry, Marc Lowe, Mo Wasley (who says she'll share hers with Sadie and Ollie) and Elliott Winslow; and the first winners of six-month subscriptions are (ta-daaa) JC Dill, Claudia Imatt and Ron Karr.
Thank you GamesGrid! And thank you Ken!!
We were in a festive mood at the December tourney. Thanks to all of you who took a respite from Christmas shopping, tree cutting, present wrapping, etc., to be part of our "family gathering." Claudia, Bill and Jim especially loved that Football Fun-pack.
January begins membership renewals. Since we began the memberships last February, your 1997 membership is good in January 1998. And the Brownie Points race is still on. In fact, the January tourney is Double Brownie Points month -- points acquired in January will apply to both the 1997 and 1998 membership years. (Richard reports that if we can get a 64-draw in the Open Section, Ron Karr's lead is in danger!) BGBB members get a $5 discount on tourney play, are in the running for the BIG PRIZE (make plans to be there in February to find out what it is!), and get all kinds of hooha and verbal confetti when they place in a tourney (even non-BGBB tourneys)!
Players in the News: The November Las Vegas tourney winner's list was peppered with BGBB names - Congrats to Steve Clark (Blitz 1st); Ron Karr (Blitz 2nd); Mo Wasley (Ladies 1st); Elliott Winslow (Open Semi); and Kit Woolsey (Open Consol 2nd).
Rollicking in Rio - Nick Ballard (1st) returns triumphant!
GammonAssociates 40th in LA - The streak continues! Yay Odis Chenault (Super 32 2nd).
And a big hand for the on-liners: David Escoffery's FIBS Winter 1997 - Paul Albert and Mike Colgan (Open quarters).
Nice going y'all!
Announcements: Any stamp collectors out there? When Svilen Todorov sends dice cups, the packages have some really pretty Bulgarian stamps on them. Anyone who would like to have them, please let Beth know.
Merry Christmas, Marvin! BGBB's Christmas card to FIBS maven Marvin (Andreas Schneider, IRL) is up on the Web page. Thanks to all of you who participated (especially all of you who kept it a secret while we collected photos), although I thought that FIBS t-shirts had had a wider distribution! Big hugs to Elliott for bringing his camera along to all the tourneys, and for providing the Web space to keep the pictures.
Not to get too sentimental, but I have to take time here as 1997 draws to a close to say thanks to all of you players for making BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY's second year as much fun as it was. We welcomed visitors from all over the world (Denmark, New Zealand and Holland were a few of the places our world-wide friends came from), all over the country (New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Colorado, Delaware, Oregon, Maryland and Washington were represented), and the length of breadth of California.
This year, we were given yet another opportunity to savor tangibly the giving spirit of the backgammon community. Steve Smiley's "endowment" of learning materials and playing equipment for the BGBB Lending Library has brought out the generous spirit of others -- the library is growing via more contributions. And the ability to be part of this legacy of learning is, for me, truly rewarding.
Generosity of time and spirit are the bywords of BGBB's Ruling Committee. Nick Ballard, Elliott Winslow and Kit Woolsey give freely their words of wisdom and nudges of direction, and keep the mechanics of tournament organization in keeping with a fun day and a fair game.
Richard McIntosh has authored the public face of BGBB. That our Web page is such an attractive and fun place is reflective of Richard's personality; that it is the best (repeat, THE BEST) resource for on-line backgammon instruction is the result of his donation of countless hours in pursuit of excellence. His success is our benefit.

Here are some thoughts, shared with us by Antoine Azzaria, to carry all of bgdom into 1998, and beyond:
The important thing in backgammon is not to win, but to take part. The important thing in life is not the winning, but the trying.
The essential thing is not to beat someone, but to have played well.
To spread these precepts is to build a stronger, more scrupulous, and more generous humanity.
Happy New Year, everyone!
