The Great Entertainer in San Francisco was really a super place to have a tournament. Pizzas without parallel, Karaoke Coffees beyond compare, the parking plentiful, the sun shone -- and the response was overwhelmingly positive (with a few suggestions to turn down the music a bit next time). Many thanks are due to Odis Chenault, who suggested that TGE venue would fit the BGBB venue search bill.
If anyone knows of any potential tourney sites nearer San Jose (closer for us South Bay dwellers), please let us know.
Players In the News: Congrats to the travelling local, Elliott Winslow, who with Howard Markowitz made the semifinals in the Turnberry Isle ProAm, and who all by himself took home the Last Jackpot grand prize. Elliott found immediate use for his winnings when a couple days later all his clothes disappeared from his rent-a-car (but not his three Cs: Cash, Computer and Camera). He's been shopping ever since he got back to SF, I hear!
An Old Policy, Newly Formalized: BGBB's informal policy about tournament division play has been that when you win a certain division twice, you are upgraded to the next level. But sometimes a division draw consists of fewer than a dozen entrants, and sometimes it's more than 20. Since it seems unfair to make the same upgrade assessment in all cases, and because a knowledgeable computer programmer can apply a fair mathematical equation to the matter (take a bow, Richard!), we are pleased to be able to let the numbers do the talking. Using the same formulas used to calculate annual Brownie Points for members, we now can calculate lifetime points accumulated for all players. And the result is a new official policy:
Two or more lifetime points do-si-does a player out of the Beginners Division into the Intermediate, and four or more points merits the red carpet to the Open Division. Directors' discretion is reserved (Kent Goulding, who has no Brownie Points, for example, would not be allowed to enter the Intermediate Division).
The Lifetime Points list is available at the tourneys (you can E-mail me if you'd like to know what yours are).
Announcements: Nobody submitted any fun announcements, so here's a strident one from BGBB: The draws will start promptly at noon. Penalty points will be assessed for late arrivals. There.
I hope you've all had a chance to check out the new BGBB Web site. Richard's done a bang-up job with the new look: new logo, easier navigation around the site, and a wealth of information about BGBB and our players. New information is being added all the time. Stop by and check us out.
Believe it or not, the next tourney is your last chance to practice in San Mateo before the April Las Vegas tourney! We hope to see you there.
Upcoming tournament flyers, sample Chicago Point and Flint BackgammoNews newsletters, new and old backgammon publications, they're all available at the next tourney, which is ...
