Ken Arnold and GamesGrid support local backgammon in a big way, and their generosity is appreciated by us here at BGBB, and by the players who again this month receive bonus subscription prizes for placing at the May tourney. Six-month subscriptions go to the Main Flight winners - Jim Milner, Bear Reeves and Kit Woolsey. Three-month GG memberships go to Richard McIntosh, Nicky Niknam, Jean Reeves, Jen Wickboldt and Hristo Zahov for their showings. And one-month welcomes await Marc Lowe and Emil Malek. Thanks, y'all, and enjoy!
Bear and Jean Reeves travel down from Anderson, California (it's up near Canada somewhere) to visit us every once in a while, and they were really happy they made the trek in May. Not only did they whisk away first- and second-place finishes, but by virtue of Jean's having gotten into the car last when they left home, we figured she had travelled the farthest of the two of them. That means Jean was the Long Distance Award winner, and took home a NetGammon t-shirt for the honor.
Many thanks to NetGammon for their participation in our festivities.
Players In the News: Catching up from last month, the Las Vegas tourney sent one more player home to the San Francisco Bay with a big smile and a tidy return in investment: Glenn Nunez was the Nevada State Beginners Last Chance 2nd Place finisher.
This month, Odis Chenault and Julius High headed down to LA, and came home with Open 2nd Place and Intermediate Consolation 2nd Place titles, respectively.
Congratulations, folks!
Here today, back again tomorrow? Elliott Winslow figured he'd have a better chance winning next year's Nordic Wide Open if he had a home field advantage. Well, that's not the entire story (in fact, I made it up) -- the whole scoop (complete with photos) behind Elliott's hightailing it to Copenhagen is available on his Web page, but personally I suspect that Elliott moved away so that he could see us more often (he so likes to travel!).
Elliott's departure leaves BGBB without its semiofficial photojournalist, and one shy of an odd number of Ruling Committee members. The latter circumstance has a happy resolution. BackGammon By the Bay is greatly pleased to announce that David Escoffery has favorably answered our request to fulfill the duties of Ruling Committee service. David joins Nick Ballard and Kit Woolsey on the panel, which determines and arbitrates sticky tournament procedure calls. The Ruling Committee also helps us out with behind-the-scenes directional advice and suggestions, and David's substantial tournament experience (he has been running the FIBS tourneys, so knows a thing or two about organizing in a big way!), evenhandedness and innovative approach to matters is good news for us BGBB players. Thank you, David, and welcome to the family.
Announcements: From Marin to Monterey, folks keep asking me the same question: "Is there any backgammon activity in my area?" The Bay Area Backgammon BBS is like an online bulletin board -- Make a posting, and others who see your message and have a like interest can respond. Initiated and maintained by Patti Beadles, it's a free service available to all. Details on subscribing, posting, unsubscribing, *everything about ba-backgammon*, are available on the BGBB Web page (Click on "Members," then click on "mailing list.")
Our once-a-month tourneys aren't enough bg for some folks. Frankly, we'd like to have a regular venue for expansion, too. If you know of any facility willing to host us on a regular basis (another once a month gig? once a week?), let us know. From Marin to Monterey, BGBB can be there!
The Problem Set entries on the Web page's Annotated Games section has gotten some pleasant feedback. It seems that folks are reaping great benefit from Ron Karr's arduous play-by-play analysis. If you haven't visited there, here's some advice: Hope your next opponent hasn't visited there either!
