Congratulations to you all!
July's tourney was both traditional and novel. At this second annual added money event, we greeted five new players and welcomed a whole buncha new members. On behalf of all who were there, we say thank you to all BGBB members, whose membership fees made the added money possible.
GamesGrid made the prize pots even sweeter. Grand prize six-month GG subscriptions go to Timothy Jaxon, Rawlin Pullen and Zaya Roveil. Three-month winners were Paul Albert, Mike Fujita, Richard Gibson, Lorien Phippeny and Brad Vogt. And one-month GG membership packages are reserved for Ken Arnold (I wonder what he'll do with his!!), Igor Krivokon and Hristo Zahov. Happy 'Gridding, y'all, and thanks Ken!
Long distance calling: Mike Fujita trekked in from HI to say "hi," the most travelled of all in attendance. He wore a new t-shirt home for his efforts, courtesy of NetGammon.
Many thanks to all of you who helped make our July tourney a very special event.
And speaking of well-travelled, there were lots of BGBBers in Europe just as France was celebrating its World Cup victory. Steve Choi and Rob Fulop were there, as were Frank Berkenkotter and Marilyn Stettler. Elliott Winslow must have caught a whiff of all the excitement on his way to Monte Carlo. And Robert Caradien, who was in Nice to root his motherland on, probably *still* is doing celebratory cartwheels!
Web Weavings: A new addition has been made to the BGBB Web site. As a final project for one of my classes, I put together a (hopefully) useful resource for backgammon players who've never played in a tournament before, illustrating step-by-step what a newbie can expect to encounter in tourney bg. Have you ever invited someone to join you at a tournament, who said s/he was "not good enough" to go? Send 'em on over to the Beginners' Backgammon Banquet, where they can get the whole scoop and not have to feel like a complete geek on the way in the door!
Half of the entries in Problem Set #1 have been posted. Ron Karr's weekly analyses are truly treasures to behold. This unique play-by-play forum gives all of us a chance to study a position, and compare our mathematical and instinctive abilities with Ron's in-depth examination and JellyFish's numbers. Each Monday brings the solution to last week's problem, and a new problem to ponder.
Did you know that the BGBB Web site receives on average over 2,000 visits a month? The Annotated Games page (the most popular of the destinations) is able to host a Webvert. If you have a service, business or message that you would like to advertise on the Web, please contact Richard or me (and we can work with you to develop the artwork).
Players in the News: Elliott Winslow takes second at the Monte Carlo World Championships. Art Grater takes second at the Georgia Championships Last Chance. David Simpson takes first in the Open Consolation at the Georgia Championships. And John Graas takes Open 4th/5th at the Michigan Summer Championships. Hooray!
