Congratulations to Jonathan Weinstein, BackGammon By the Bay's 1999 Open Division Player of the Year. Jonathan started with three straight victories in Alameda (February-April), followed by a finals appearance in San Mateo in April and then a win in San Mateo in May. He ended with a split consolation final in July, before leaving the Bay Area to pursue graduate studies in economics at MIT. A pretty impressive showing!
Sho Sengoku blazed an amazing trail through 1999, and is the Intermediate Division Player of the Year as the consequence. The truth be told, his showing is a testament to stalwartness — BGBB hosted 20 tournaments this past year, and Sho was a player in 17 of them! Welcome to the Open Division, Sho!
Perserverence played a part in Cindy Moss' crowning as Beginners Division Player of the Year as well. Travelling up from Southern California for three of the tourneys, Cindy won two of them, results that gave her the edge in the Beginners Division Brownie Points race, and the red carpet to the Intermediate Division.
Congratulations to Jonathan, Sho, and Cindy, and to all the players in all the tournaments this year.
Where will BGBB be in 2000? The Whole Shabang will re-open some time early this year, more likely than not at a new location. Joe Rossi has extended an invitation to us to continue hosting monthly tourneys, and when he drops anchor we will let you know.
There is no other venue on the horizon. We would like to hold two monthly tourneys, but site searches have proven fruitless. You can help, if you know of a site and are willing to do some legwork. Contact either Richard or myself for details.
