Many thanks to the QCafe in Palo Alto for hosting the first BGBB tournament of the year. We hadn't had the chance earlier to celebrate the 1999 Players of the Year, Jonathan Weinstein (Open), Sho Sengoku (Intermediate) and Cindy Moss (Beginners), so we set out to make up for the delay on Sunday. Sho was there to accept personally the kudos and prizes that go along with his title, and Jonathan (in Massachusetts) and Cindy (in Southern California) were saluted in absentia.

And if all that weren't enough, the Long Distance Award was garnered by Art Grater, who coasted all the way up from Pebble Beach to participate in the festivities.

Thanks to one and all for making a very successful and enjoyable tournament.

Happily we announce that our inaugural tournament at the QCafe was so successful, we've been invited to do it again. And again. Backgammon in the Summer in the City of Palo Alto at the QCafe has a schedule:

June 11 (the second Sunday) - 4:00 p.m. (sign-ups at 3:00)
July 9 (the second Sunday) - 4:00 p.m. (sign-ups at 3:00)
August 13 (the second Sunday) - 4:00 p.m. (sign-ups at 3:00)
Sept. 10 (the second Sunday) - 2:00 p.m. (sign-ups at 1:00)

Beginners Division — 5-point matches in a Round Robin format. Entry fee $15, Registration fee $5.

Intermediate Division — 7-point matches in a Double-elimination format. Entry fee $30, Registration fee $5.

Open Division — 7-point matches in a Double-elimination format. Entry fee $60, Registration fee $5.

Blitz matches all day long.

With September come football games, and the QCafe will open earlier; so we'll be able to start the tourneys earlier. We'd be willing to start earlier over the summer, as well -- and if we show up in massive numbers during the summer (hint, hint), we might be able to convince the management that opening earlier all year 'round would be worthwhile to them. So bring your buddies, your neighbors, your out-of-town guests (and we're even a good bunch to hang out with if your house is being remodeled), and come roll (in the hey!) with us!

Announcements

We are happy that a new Northern California backgammon club has been formed -- the Redwood Empire Backgammon Club in San Rafael, directed by our friend, Timothy Jaxon.

In keeping with the promises we made to you when the information was collected, we will not share the BGBB mailing list with anyone. We have included Timothy's telephone number in all announcements that we have sent to our membership recently, and here it is again:
