A hardy group braved the Mothers' Day crowds to enjoy backgammon by the bay in Oakland on May 13th. These folks were happy that Momma didn't mind.
This month marks the publication of our new Elo rating feature. All BGBB matches since February 1996 have been used to calculate relative ratings using an Elo system, similar to those used by the online backgammon servers (and originally implemented in the chess world, based on the work of Professor Elo). We will use the rating system to distinguish among beginner, intermediate, and open level players.
Beginner players start with a 1500 rating. Intermediate players start with a 1550 rating. Open players start with a 1600 rating.
A Beginner player who reaches a rating above 1550 moves into the Intermediate division. If an Intermediate player's rating falls below 1500, they may play in the Beginner division until reaching 1550 again.
An Intermediate player who reaches a rating above 1600 moves into the Open division. If an Open player's rating falls below 1550, they may play in the Intermediate division until reaching 1600 again.
A player may always decide to play in a higher division. The directors reserve the right to place a player in the division that reflects their playing strength.
Players in the News: At the 13th Nordic "Wide" Open in April, our old buddy Sho Sengoku won the Championship Consoldation division, and Kit Woolsey was a finalist in the $2000 Super Jackpot.
At April's Gammon Associates Invitational in Los Angeles, Sho Sengoku came in second in the Doubles (with partner Dan Pehoushek).
June 10th is the last chance to hone your skills before the Las Vegas International Cup and Nevada State tournaments, which start on June 12th.
Our annual money-added event will be held on July 8th. Members are qualified for money-added prize pools. Many thanks to all the BGBB players whose annual memberships fund this special tournament.
