Congratulations to you all!

Here's one of the best birth announcements I've ever seen.

Backgammon strategist Jim Milner (who has played in Venice, Monte Carlo, Aspen, Bermuda, Backgammon-at-Sea, London, Las Vegas, etc.) is proud to announce that, even though backgammon is terrific and all, his wonderful wife, Rita, gave birth to their daughter, Sydney Milner, and it is the most wonderful thing in this life!

Says Jim, "After years of being on the singles prowl with backgammon board in one hand and wedding plans in the other, along came Rita, who tickled my heart and solidified my love for her. She too, wanted children and so we played some backgammon to see who would win the toss ... off ... your clothes. The rest is history ... (folks!)

"Sydney was premature (26 weeks!), which means we have to take extra special care of her until she's a year old. It's just like me to have a wonderful girl who beats me in the running game already! And now Sydney is 2+ months old and is 10 lbs and growing strong. We thank Kaiser for their neonatal ICU and five doctors and ten nurses on rotation for saving our child. Our hearts will always be there for them and all healthcare professionals who really love their work.

"When Odis Chenault had his child, we never saw him play any more at BGBB (ed. note: Odis and Yolanda also work on Sundays), but this will not happen to us. Rita wants to learn more, and Sydney will learn backgammon as a lesson in money management. I plan to give her a starting 100 chips and see how long she can last with that bank. I hope it will grow large enough to cover her education and travel funds.

"If anyone has suggestions on how to make backgammon easier for children, please send them to me. Nack Ballard will give her some basic lessons to get her going, and within a few years she will join me at BGBB on Sundays and you all can see her!" Congratulations to Rita and Jim. We can expect that with Jim's influence, Sydney will have a backgammon career marked by strength, politesse, and enthusiasm!

Must-see BG: Bill Davis' 2002 Midwest Backgammon Championships had a mystery theme, and the tourney flyers were made to resemble a 1940s pulp fiction "whodunit" novel. Chapter One of the story is inside the front cover, and the Case of the Deadly Roll will be solved at the March tournament. Sounds like fun!

Reggie Henkart reports that every (non-raining) afternoon, backgammon games happen at the esplanade in front of the Cafe Depot in Mill Valley. Anyone who might like to play in a chouette or an informal game can show up around 4pm. Look for the chess players; the backgammon players are close to them (the ones with the backgammon boards). On rainy days, you will find them at the same time in the Sweetwater bar (a block away). Games usually end around 7pm.

Swift recovery wishes to Frank Berkenkotter. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Marilyn.
