BACKGAMMON BY THE BAY

Game Formats

The games are available in a number of formats and styles: standard, Java, and character formats; and play-by-play, all-in-one, and game listing styles.

You should choose an appropriate format and style, based on the capabilities of your browser and your aesthetic preferences, in order to maximize your viewing pleasure.

The standard format displays the boards as graphical images, based on original work by Tom Keith. Beginning with Game 11, only this format will be published. (Previous games will be converted as time allows.)

The HTML TABLE directive is used to format the pages. If the TABLE directive is enabled in your browser, you will see the sample board to the right, inside a bordered box. The page layout will be different if the TABLE directive is not enabled, but should be acceptable.

The character format displays the boards in ASCII (character) mode, X-and-O style. This is useful if your browser supports neither graphical images nor Java (Backgammon by the Bay is Lynx-friendly).

The Java format displays the boards as grayscale graphics, produced by a Java applet.

If Java is enabled in your browser, the board will be rendered as a grayscale graphic; otherwise, the board will be rendered in ASCII (character) mode (see below). The Java applet takes a moment to download after the rest of the page is displayed, so please be patient.

Note: Under current implementations of Java, the boards cannot be printed. Use the standard or character formats if you intend to print the pages.

Your browser does not seem to support Java. The board images will be displayed in ASCII (character) mode, and you should choose one of the Java-deprived formats.

You can download a Java-enabled browser:

[Netscape Navigator] [Internet Explorer]

Warning!   Running Java will cause your browser to use more memory. In Netscape, it will consume much more memory (perhaps 16-20MB, depending on the number of applets running); Netscape does not recognize that the same applet is running multiple times in the all-in-one game format. (Internet Explorer handles this opportunity correctly.)

Your browser should warn you if memory is low, and recover gracefully, but consequences are unpredictable if an application runs out of memory. The most likely results are that the browser will freeze or crash. Unfortunately, your system may suffer the same fate. This is not caused by the game applet (other than by requesting more memory), but by the (lack of appropriate) interaction between the browser and the operating system. If the problem persists, consider viewing a less-intrusive format of the games.

The play-by-play style presents each play on a separate page. You can evaluate the position, consider the analyst's comments, and review JellyFish's evaluations, before deciding on your best play and moving on to see the actual over-the-board play.

The all-in-one style presents an entire game as a single (long) page. The initial download takes longer, but after that it's a little faster to read through (plus you get to peek ahead).

The listing style is simply the list of plays, without commentary or board images.

And now, let the games begin ...
